Course Description:
This beginner-level course focuses on the Semi-Cursive (Xing Style, 行书) of Chinese calligraphy, a fluid and expressive style that bridges the gap between the rigid precision of Kai Style and the free-flowing movements of Cursive Style. Over 10 weeks, students will be introduced to the foundational techniques of Xing Style, learning to master the balance between control and freedom of movement. Designed for beginners, this course provides step-by-step guidance in brush handling, stroke flow, and character structure.
The course begins with an introduction to the history and characteristics of Xing Style, exploring its unique position between the more formal Kai Style and the faster, more expressive Cursive Style. Students will also learn the fundamentals of calligraphy tools and materials, including proper brush handling techniques and posture, which are essential for achieving smooth, flowing strokes.
As students progress, they will begin to practice the basic brush strokes in Xing Style. Unlike the more rigid strokes of Kai Style, the strokes in Xing Style are connected and flowing, requiring students to develop a greater sense of rhythm and motion. Lessons will focus on achieving a balance between speed and control, allowing students to write characters that are both legible and expressive.
Students will explore the structure of semi-cursive characters, learning how to simplify strokes without losing the essential form and meaning of each character. Through practice, they will become familiar with connecting strokes and creating continuous lines, which are characteristic of the Xing Style. This will help students develop a fluid writing style that retains clarity and grace.
As the course progresses, students will practice commonly used characters, gradually increasing the complexity of the characters and focusing on maintaining the balance between speed, fluidity, and structure. Special attention will be given to transitioning between characters smoothly, creating cohesive and harmonious compositions.
The final lessons will allow students to create their own semi-cursive calligraphy compositions, where they can express their personal style while applying the techniques they have learned. These final projects will bring together all elements of semi-cursive calligraphy, including stroke flow, structure, and expression.
By the end of the course, students will have gained a strong foundation in the semi-cursive Xing Style of Chinese calligraphy, mastering the balance between precision and fluidity. They will be able to create characters that are both dynamic and graceful, setting the stage for further exploration and growth in Chinese calligraphy.
